I took my aging car in for an overdue oil change yesterday. I wasn’t expecting much, as the “quick change” places generally want to process and get you out as quickly as possible. I can see both sides of the argument: someone in a hurry doesn’t likely want to be up-sold on things, nor do they want to idly chit-chat. On the other side, if they’re busy in the shop, they need to keep the line moving.

This is about Canada’s treatment of its indigenous peoples over the past century and more. It’s not an easy topic to discuss, and I believe that most of us are ignorant as to just how terrible it was.

Safe Places

We all want to feel safe, and there are many places in our lives that can provide that feeling. Feeling safe affects our well-being on all levels, from the primal to the emotional to the intellectual. Many of us rarely have the opportunity to let down our protective barriers or relax our emotional suppression; to wear our vulnerability on our sleeves. How often do we truly offer, without reservation, to be and hold that sacred safe space for others?

In Love/Hate with the Modern World

It starts from the top. That is something we all know. We don’t know who is truly at the top; it certainly isn’t a president, prime minister, or pope. Oligarchs? Clever (but evil) aliens? Stonecutters? Regardless, our modern world is based on power hierarchies, particularly in government, industry, commerce, education, science, and religion, all of which are heavily influenced by the capitalist market system. The system is clearly flawed, which is not surprising to most of us.
