The Quiet Why

Not everything that calls for your effort deserves your energy. Sometimes, the work is to get quiet, find your why, and trust what unfolds.

.   .   .

It’s not solely about motivation. If your only reason to do something is I should, there’s other work to be done first.

When exploring the why of a thing, our intuition and foresight can reach into the vastness of potentiality, allowing us to imagine possible outcomes. We can draw on past experience and present understanding to inform our decisions, but there’s more to it than thinking things through.

In these moments of reflection, valuable information emerges: emotions and insights, doubts and fears, hopes and desires. It’s a flurry of data for the mind to decipher, filter, and interpret, while the heart attempts to discern what truly matters.

Yet we rarely afford ourselves the time to find real clarity. Life is busy or intense, or we keep hearing what we don’t want to hear.

Clarity, too, is beyond thinking.

In a culture heavily bent toward instant gratification, intuition and wisdom often rank far behind I want it now. Even I need to know can be a remnant of anxious attachment, a need for certainty rooted in our fear of the unknown. Needing, in general, can stem from beliefs of lack.

Remember, if it is to be, it will. It’s not only patience but trust that is required. We can do our part, make our choices, and take action without trying to force every answer or outcome into being on our terms.

We expend a lot of energy caring, pretending to care, or worrying about whether we should care. We care too much about what everyone else is caring about… or whether anyone really cares about us at all!

That’s messy. Of course people care, but when we become preoccupied with needing proof of it, we can lose sight of what’s already there… or what we need to find within ourselves.

No wonder apathy creeps in now and again. Sometimes, it’s a balancing mechanism, a way of catching our breath when we’ve expended too much energy on things that drain us. We need a break, a little space to step back and discern what genuinely deserves our attention.

In a society that encourages us to indulge our whims while simultaneously manipulating, undermining, and suppressing our sense of identity and self-worth, it’s no wonder the spirit is so often left drifting at sea.

Clear the mechanism. Work to recognize the superficial needs and desires, but trust in the timing of life. Whether it’s career, love, or family, not everything can or should be forced into place. Let your path reveal itself in its own time, and remain open to the possibilities that emerge along the way.

Motivation is inherent and effortless when love is the fuel and authenticity is the fire.
